Monte Avena

The day after hiking up Monte San Mauro from Alla Casetta we took a quick drive to another nearby mountain that is little higher to find try to find some snow. And boy did we find plenty of snow up on Monte Avena! Enough snow to break out our snowshoes for a trek up to the summit. We drove in the rain most of the way up the mountain, but as soon as we got above about 1000 m the rain started to change to snow. By the time we reached the parking lot at about 1250 m it was snowing steadily. So off we went to the top of the mountain in fresh, deep snow.

The hike up was really nice in the steady snow. A few other people had gone up to the summit already so we had a decent track for snowshoeing. It was really peaceful in the snow and pines...and we hardly saw anyone else on our way up.

We arrived at the summit of Monte Avena which is at about 1500 m right as the clouds started to break and the snow let up. What a great weekend up in the Dolomites! We went up there thinking we'd be rained in at Alla Casetta all weekend, we brought up movies and books and had planned on a relaxing couple of days inside. But instead we ended up climbing two mountains...che figo!
